Now this is the fun bit… buying all the disco lights! It’s aery exciting time for me and I’m loving choosing all the different light effects I want to create with my music. Obviously it’s very important to get different lights to suit different moods and styles of music. For example its no good having a fast laser or strobe effect for slow smoochy love song.
I’ve got some idea on what i want my set to look like. I’ll try to explain to you what lights I’m getting and how I would like it to look on the dance floor.
I’ve seen a lot of disco’s in my time, some with too many lights use and others with not enough lights. Sometimes lights are not used at the right time and sometimes the lights used are just completely wrong for the atmosphere or music played.
I have experience of this area as I didn’t start off my dj business being the dj. Back in my younger days I used to work for a disco called quasa and instead of playing the music I originally worked as the lights man.
It’s a very important job for the light man or woman much the same as the dj. Good light’s good music! The whole atmosphere of the party must be right.
How I want the floor to look:
4 x red laser’s (got)
2 x blue laser’s (got)
2 x kam ilink green, red, yellow (got)
1 x kam tri 140 fscan (got)
2 x saturn 2 (got)
2 x sparkle led white light (got)
2 x tri gem led (got)
1 x strobe (got)
2 x smoke machine’s (got)
1 x bubble machine (got)
The thing is I don’t want too much light in your face (like a christmas tree!) seen too many disco’s like that!
I like the dark in the back ground so you can see the light’s at their full potential.
The tri gem are very good and flash as well like a strobe. It looks like they need smoke to get the affect, I’m just not too sure how many to get.
I might even get two more saturn 2 or change it a bit and get some dual gem led which is much the same as the saturn 2.
My smoke machines are going to be on the T bar’s to give the light’s a better affect. I might have one on the floor as well
and the bubble machine might be on the rig or on the floor.
The 2 lightech2010 blue laser’s I got from Hong Kong are bloody brilliant…totally perfect… with 300mw (450nm) they are very powerful so no smoke needed for these.
My biggest piece of advice is DON’T buy overseas, the Import charges you get will set you back a few quid. I did a deal with the person before I bought these and managed to knock 60 pound of the bill. But unfortunately when they got to the UK, DHL said we had to pay import charges – it came to over £60! WHY? I cant understand why they charge you for bringing the item in to the UK. I feel I’ve been ripped off, fortunately its just a case of breaking even and not losing on money.
Take my advice and don’t follow in my shoes. I won’t be doing my business abroad again. I will be using Eclipse Sound and Light in Ipswich. What a great company, very professional, friendly and helpful. I cant recommend them enough. When I went to see them, they gave me a great deal and also had lights set up ready to show me all the different effects. We got a cup of coffee as we discussed what lights I was looking for. The salesman Dean was a top guy and I’m definitely going back there again to buy some more lights and equipment.
We are going to be recording and taking pictures of our fully set up disco soon. Watch this space!!
